Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Off the Wall / It has been awhile.
Hey everybody, I know it has been awhile but I thought I would give you an update on a story I told you about a few years ago. Anybody remember the crooked legged colt and the broken leged mare story? Well, here is the follow up to it.

More horses rescued
By KATE BRASER

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Efforts continue to rescue more than 100 horses found severely malnourished and dehydrated on a Gibson County, Ind., farm over the holiday weekend.

Richard M. Stallings, 66, of Owensville, was arrested Saturday and charged with animal cruelty
According to investigators, Stallings has 32 charges pending against him in the case, seven of which are felonies. He is free on bond, but investigators anticipate more charges could be filed as a result of Saturday's search of his property.

According to a news release from the Gibson County Sheriff's Department, an investigation began in January 2006. Since then, three search warrants have been served on Stallings' farm, first for improper burial of horses, then two more for animal cruelty and neglect.

Anthony Caldwell, director of Indiana Horse Rescue, said his agency responded to the case Saturday. He said 53 horses were in need of immediate veterinary care because of dehydration, starvation and other medical conditions.

Speaking Monday from his office in Frankfort, Ind., Caldwell said his agency took 15 of the horses.

"When we were at the property, we tagged 53 horses that were in a state of physical distress," Caldwell said. "But we only had the means to impound 15 live horses, so there are still more than 100 horses at the property."

Caldwell said hours after the horses were rescued, one gave birth. The mother and baby are now being cared for at a facility in Palmyra, Ind., near Louisville, Ky.

"The baby is not doing well at all," Caldwell said.

"And they are trying to decide right now whether to euthanize the mother, because she is in such bad shape. She is probably not going to make it."

Caldwell said the baby is getting injections of plasma.

"But if that is not successful, the baby won't make it, either," he said.

Indiana Horse Rescue workers took 36 horses from Stallings' farm last August, Caldwell said.

13 euthanized

Of those horses rescued in the August raid, Caldwell said, 13 had to be euthanized or died on their own. Two are scheduled for surgery this week.

"We probably have 10 from that group that have not been adopted yet, due to extensive medical care that was required," he said.

Caldwell said after the August raid of the property, Stallings was supposed to clean up the horse stalls and build a better shelter for winter, but those objectives allegedly were not met.

"We would have expected any reasonable person that lost 36 horses to police to have made a diligent effort to improve conditions," Caldwell said.

"But when we were there before, the stalls in the barn were three feet thick with dung and urine, and this time 25 percent were still three feet thick."

Caldwell said Stallings had also failed to build a suitable shelter to house the horses in winter.

"What he put up was wholly inappropriate," he said.

The latest batch of horses requiring extensive care has spread Caldwell's agency thin.

"It is causing us distress in the way of resources and space," he said.

Caldwell plans to meet with the prosecutors and a judge Wednesday to determine what to do with the remaining horses.

Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / General Horse Chat / Re: Ripples had her baby.
Thanks.
Well, he is laid to rest and everything is done except going back to work (and class). Roll Eyes It took all day, but it is done. Every body got a chance to say good-bye. Ripples had some interest while I was taking the foal out back but she never came close to the foal but everybody else smelled it over and checked it out.  For some strange reason, Rosco (the dog) got real protective of the dead foal. He had never seen it alive but I took the dogs out with me while I dug the hole. Rosco, who normaly runs around and explores, stayed right by that colt. He would run off anything (cat, dog or horse) that came near it. He even chased off Comet and Dasher when they came over to investigate. He would normaly try to avoid the horses if he can or get someplace they can't reach him. He was right there next to the body and checking on it every so often. Then right as I was starting to cover the foal up, Rosco went in to the hole and started pushing dirt on him with his nose. I just stood there and watched in amazment. This dog kept pushing dirt over the body until I told him to get out of the hole. Rosco then stood on the side of the grave and was pawing at the sides of the hole. He was right there the entire time I was covering up the foal. How strange is that? dontknow

Well, not this year. Cry  Looks like Mrs Ripples will have to try again another year to have a live one. Man what a shame too. He was one good looking son of a gun. Ripples seems to be doing fine. I turned her out and she went running off to everyone else. At least I know what I might get with a cross between her and Junior.  Well, I am going to get some needed sleep. I will type again later.

As of the last feeding, he is still here and clinging on. He still has not stood but he is moving around. I have been doing the two hour feeding thing and am about slap-happy tierd, but if this little guy pulls through, he will be well worth the effort. He is a beautiful dark brown/bay with the tiniest of stars on his forehead. I go in and milk Ripples and then give it to him. He is taking about 80cc a feeding. He is not really sucking alot now, but he still takes it in. His head flops from side to side and when you try to move him around he grunts. Leave him to his own devices and he trs to crawl around. He has not gotten the back legs to work the way he (or myself) would like but he is getting good and moving the front legs around. I have straw stacked up behind him so he can kind of sit up some. I also have him on a thermal blanket to help keep him from getting too cold. He is wearing the dog blanket I use to put on Moses in the winter. It fits.  dontknow Ripples has walked away from him for the most part. She is paying more attention to the other horses then on him. She will walk away from the stall and not even try to look back. He perks up when I come in to the stall. He starts to move around and will figit when I am trying to feed him.  She is just happy because when ever I go to milk her I put something in front of her face. Makes things allot easier that way.
Well, I will let everyone know what happens through the night. I am going to go lay my head down for a while. Until the next feeding anyway.  Roll Eyes

Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / General Horse Chat / Ripples had her baby.
Well as of this morning, there is a new horse here. a little black/bay toby STUD colt. I had told Val this morning that is was a little filly. Suprise! There was a stem on that apple. I did not see it until the vet got here. Now before anybody breaks out the party favors, the colt is not starting off on the right foot. As a matter of fact, he has not stood on any feet yet. He has not gotten up so the out look is gaurded at best. The vet looked him over and is not sure what is going on. He is very small and really has no concept of what thoses things (legs) that seem to flop everywhere are for.  Doc Stone does not think it is any problem with fescue of anything. He said he would have though a dummy foal except that the little guy has a very good sucking reflex. He checked Ripples out to see if maybe there were twins. Nope. The other mistery is the placenta. It was very small, and real (almost like paper) thin. Looks like Ripples also is lacking in the milk department too. He looked over her milk ans said it does not look like she made any colostrume. She is producing milk but he wonders about the nutricianal quality of it. He gave him some IgG and some anti-biotics to get things going. I asked him to tell me straight as far as what his chances are. He said maybe 30%-35% ?  He said with the fact that the colt is bright in the eyes and wants to nurse, that I should not give up on him yet but to give it a few days to see. He said to try to keep him warm (yes Val, with a blanket or two) and to keep feeding him and encouraging him to try to get up. While the vet was here he did try to sit up and managed too for a few minuets. Keep your fingers crossed and good thought for the little guy and I will keep you updated as more is known.
