Title: Geldings...
Post by: turninburninbuddy on August 04, 2005, 12:28:52 PM
Okay I am the first to admitt I know nothing about horse breeding.  I own a gelding now and my past horses have been geldings.  This is the first gelding I have had that is soooooooo interested in mares.  His pasture pal is a mare, she is in heat and they are carrying on like he is a prize stud.  Two mares in the next pasture are in heat as well and they line up at the fence.  He was  so worked up today he must have sweated off 10 pounds.  I know he is not proud cut.  Have any of you heard of geldings with sooo much "drive"?  He is doing his best to cover a almost 16 hand mare and he is about 14.2.  Its pretty humorous, I just worry one of them is going to get hurt.  Any thoughts on my buddy boy would be cool.

thanks

I have never had that problem with any of my past geldings.  Back in March I had my 4 year old stud cut.  He has yet to be turned out with any mares yet for that reason.  Every day he gets better, and less studly acting so I think I will let him winter before I turn him out with any mares.  I did have him turned out once with another gelding but all he did was run him.

My good friend has a gelding that will pick on the mares and play with them.  she said he even tries to mount them every once in a while.   :dontknow: Sorry I was not much help!

I have seen many geldings that will act like that if they are the only gelding around a herd of mares.  I also have a friend that gelded her stud at age 14 because he was never able to get a mare in foal.  He is now 26 and still tries to breed everything on the block.  Go figure.  I haven't had that problem here because I seldom turn a gelding out with that many mares, but in my dry lot I do have the arab gelding out with 2 mares and he has started herding them.  He doesn't do that if there is another gelding turned out with him.   :dontknow:

i had a paint gelding that thought he was "the man".. tried to "woo" all my mares...... finally he got the point and stopped hollering, snorting and prancing when they ignored him, i never turn my boys out with the mare, she is a REAL alpha mare...she would kick their hinnies..LOL!!!!!
sorry couldnt be more help. but as an aside ... :welcome: :wave1:

Thanks for all the coments.  He thinks he is the ladies man.  The mares in the next pasture are the neighbors.  I was up at the pasture yesterday and he mounted and gave it his all like 5 times in half an hour.  Poor guy he was sweating like crazy.  Hopefully he will get it figured out that he just hasen't got it.

I use to have a gelding that thought he was the man but only to my paint mare. I had to stop taking both of them to shows since he was a total jerk when it came to her. He had been around her since she was born and that was his lady. If I took them both to a show, all he would do is think and wonder about her and not pay any attention to me or the fact we were there to run. At home he would run everybody else off or away from here. I had her mother and another paint mare here, but he neverpaid them much mind. When I lost her it broke his heart. I sold him a week later. I have seen him since then and he is just not the same ol' horse. While she was sick, he would just stand by her or real close near her. If I had to leave her in the barn, he would stand in the lean-to with his head through her window. It was both sweet and sad at the same time. Although this horse acted like a stud he never mounted anything. The other gelding never acted studish but mounted his mare every  chance he could. :dontknow:

Okay everyone, my Casanova gelding has now challenged another gelding when a friend came by to ride.  He wanted to tear her horse apart.  Her horse just looked at him like he was a nut.  I am thinking next week I may take to a friends place to see if a change of venue makes him act differently.  Shes a trainer with an arena and barrels to run.  It will be the first time I have every taken anywhere to run I'm a little nerveous about how he will do. :embarassed:  :cowboyhorse:

We had a pony gelding that wasn't gelded until he was three b/c his past owners were using him for god knows what.  The left him in a field, eventually, and the breeder brought him back to her place, gelded him, and that was that.  He was always a tough guy, but when my mare was in heat, he would try mounting her, which was silly b/c he was about 54'' and she was 15.3 hands high and he just had trouble.  He would squabble and curl his lip and go batty.  And at shows, we would have to hide her when he was competing.  Note to self: POA's are headstrong anyway, so it just makes it worse!

update on Buddy and the ladies....

The four mares next door..well I rent the pasture buddy and bop are on and the guy that owns it made a deal with the neighbor.  Now Buddy has five women sharing his 5 acres.  Two of which think he is the answer to their midnight fantasy.  Took us about 30 minutes to catch him yesterday and today what an butt head he was.  No I had no idea they were going to do this not even a phone call.  What do u guys think?  Oh yeah add 5 goats to the picture for added fun.

Let me see if I get this right. The guy you rent the pasture from made a deal with another neighbor and turned your two horses out with thier three mares and five goats and did not tell you they were going to do this? Why? Was this person thinking they were doing you a favor? You might want to mention that next time they get and idea to do you a favor, they might want to consider asking first. Is there any way you can put your two back?

there are four mares 5 goats and he is getting his pasture cleaned up by the neighbor for putting the horses in with mine.  There is another 5 acres unused but some other yahoo has dug a couple of 3 ft holes for no reason and a puttin green with whole in the middle of it.  in addition that pasture has a serious blackberry issue.  Buddy is in heaven all the ladies follow him around.  Problem is now he doesn't want to run barrels he just wants to frolick.  Hopefully the "new" will wear off and he will get back to business.

Let Buddy get a dose of 4 mares with PMS all at the same time, and he may rethink the idea of running barrels ain't so bad.  :kickass:
