Title: How far would you go?
Post by: 1Wildcowgirl on June 08, 2005, 02:46:37 AM
If you found a stud that you really liked and just had to breed to him and the owners do not offer shipped semen.  How far would you drive to get your mare bred???

Well I would be the wrong person to ask because I have hauled mares to Florida and to Oklahoma.  I personally have had nothing but trouble using shipped and the few times it was successful it would have been as cheap to haul the mare and pay board and make the return trip to get her.  And the upside is that I like to see the country some.

Val- You are my kinda gal!  I love seeing the country!  I tell people I'm like a dog, I love to roll the windows down and ride in the car! ;D  I have heard bad things about AI and have heard little good.  AI kinda scares me cause about 3 years ago I AI my mare twice and she never took ::)

Ramsey-  I'm still hooked on this stud I found in OK, 15 hours away according to map quest.  (However plans could change once we go to Vals ;)).  He has a LCFG wich is what I want, he has the bloodlines and like and the people that stand him are really nice!  And is babies WOW they are nicley marked and tanks!  Good thing is my dog will be having puppies so I can use that money, bad thing is Matt says my truck will need a new clutch and transmition before making the trip! :(  No problem I will save my puppy money for that and start saving every month for the stud fee and mare care.  Well that WAS the plan until he told me how much it is "probably" going to be!  Anyone one wanna guess????  It's a 1999 ford F-550.  Ok I will tell you!  For the trans and clutch it's "probably" going to cost $3,000!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o  Talk about crushing my dreams!  Don't worry I'm sceaming up another plan!  Heck and this is this week!  My chocie could change next week! ;)

I hauled Juniors Momma to South Carolina to get him (and yes, there is a story in that trip). I have tried A.Iing once (twice really since we shipped twice for the same horse) and it never took. The stud (Cherokee Indian) was ok for live cover but did not ship well at all.
I try to stay local but if the right stud comes into the radar I might have to make a road trip.

Pack up the car, where going to town ::)

I would probaby haul my mare, as AI doesn't take well on her.  She would need constant ultrasounding an what have you.  However, live cover is just fine.  She was bred just this year and took like it was nothing!  If the stallion was just perfect, I might just travel that far.  However, the stallion at our barn is just gorgeous and I know him so well.  She was bred to him last year, too, but she had a stillborn.  It was really hard, but we regrouped.  I would have to haul her myself, however, and I have only been pulling a trailer for about 6 months and it would make the people who care about me a little nervous!
