Luckly none of my horses go back to the lines they think HERDA traces to.

In my opinion - there has not been enough research done yet.  This awful disease need a lot more research and I will be glad when they can test for it.  Since this is a resessive disease the only way you will find out if your horse carries it is if you breed it to a carrier.  I would like to see more research and testing done before they start "naming names".

I have heard about it too... sounds pretty nasty.  I don't know all the details though.  If you hear anything else, or find a good article on it, let me know.  I'll put it on here somewhere.

I saw this on website:

"The HERDA or HC gene found to be passed down from Traveler, an unregistered foundation sire born in 1890"

*GREAT* -- My stud goes back to Traveler, fairly upclose (6-7 gens back)... :S  I sure hope it wasn't him...

Of course, after reading some of the articles, it says that most of the sympotms surface around their 2-4 years when more heavy training/riding happens, and Traveler (my horse, same name!) is 7 and has had pleanty of riding and has shown no signs of this terrible disease...  doesn't mean he can't be a carrier though!

Right he must not have it or you would have surly seen problems by now I would think, but he could be a carrier.
IMO too much line breeding got it to this point. hopefuly they will get a test soon to determine who are carriers & who is not.

Hey Ramsey, I would not be too worried yet. If your boy has not shown symtoms then he does not carry both the dominate genes. The worst he could be was a carrier and only if you bred him to another "carrier", then the baby would stand a chance of being affected. AHQA just had and interesting artical on this last month (I think). Besides, if Traveler was the origin of this then there are a lot of horses out there that would carry a chance of having this gene. I son't have Poco Bueno, but mine do have Traveler and King. I am not going to lose to much sleep over it. As soon as they know more then they will be able to singel it out and test for it. It will probaly be allot like HYPP. I think the thing to learn here is be careful when trying to breed blood lines. There is a good reason why cousins should not marry. (so to speak)

I just found this HERDA yahoo group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HERDA/

It has a lot of information about HERDA and about where it is being traced to.
