Okay, what's this all entail?  From the first vet check to the in foal status?  I've never done AI and have no idea what to expect.  So you AI veterans out there, clue us in!  What kind of expenses am I looking at (not including the stud fee).  Are there any things that the vet will reccomend having done that really ISN'T necessary?  Etc etc.

1st you will have to work with your vet so that he can tell you when to order semen, You will have vet bill for this from him, then you will have to pay the shipping fee that most stud horses charge in addition to the stud fee (a few of them offer 1st shipment free), you will have to pay to ship the container back when you are done.  You will have anywhere from 50-300 in fees for shipped semen the last one I dealt with was 150 per shipment and my mare had to have it shipped 3 times plus the 750 stud fee plus the fees that the vet charged while she was at his place.  In short ended up with about 2500 in one baby for stud fees since it did not go as planned.  My brother in law has for the last 2 years bred to horses in California and Oklahoma his vet does his at his home and he ends up with about an extra 350 per mare in addition to stud fee for all miscellaneous expenses and until last year worked quite well for him.  Last year he bred 3 mares and got 1 colt this year he took 1 mare to Oklahoma paid 30days mare care and is breeding the other 2 to my thoroughbred stud.  Good luck, really depends on your vet and the shipping quality of the stud
