I thought this might be an interesting discussion. Do you use boots?

On another forum someone posed a ? as to weather they should use splint boots when lounging their youngster.

I posted that I always use boots on my horses, I NEVER ride without them & on my barrel horse who runs like a maniac on turn out he is turned out with boots on as well. They acted like I was nuts, one girl thought it was excessive & asked if I would like some bubble wrap as well.

In 33 years we have only had 4 lamenesses (knocking wood) none of which could have been prevented by the use of boots.

It make me cringe when I see people running barrels with no boots, NO legs, NO horse.

Theresa,

Hi there!  I couldn't agree with you more!  There rarely isn't a time I don't use boots on my horses legs, but it's important to not leave them on.  It suprises me how many people leave neoprene boots on their horses while they stand at a show.  Hours on end will really heat up those legs!  [confused]

I only wear polo wraps when I run.  When I warm up, I just wear bell boots.  It really depends on the horse for me.  If I'm just trail riding my finished horse, I won't wear anything, but if I'm doing some major training work on like a five year old, I'll wear Pro Choice boots.

I agree, don't let your horse keep them on any longer than they have to!

As Marth Josey says "If you don't have legs you don't have a horse"
I absolutly use boots on my horses when I run and when I rope, and also on trails.  If anything, it makes me feel better! I'm the same way when I see people running with no boots, when i run track, i use an ankle brace so protect my bad ankle, so why shouldn't I do the same for my horse.

I just am wondering if you wear boots all the time, your horse's legs may weaken because they are being supported all the time. ~~Just a thought. I agree with the "No Leg, No Horse" theory, but sometimes I think people do go alittle too far...

That very well could be, I never really thought about it that way, but on some horses you have no choice I had one gelding that interfered so badly boots were a must always, so I guess on those kind you just have to take your chances & either risk weakening or be sure of interference injurys.

Have you ever had a horse that can't stand boots?? My finished gelding WILL NOT let me put anything on his hind legs. I've quit trying.  I think if I did, they would be more of a hinderance than a help.

I am a believer in better safe than sorry!  I love my boot and I never even trail ride without them.  But my horses turn out time is without boots.  Every horse I've had that wouldn't tolerate boots on the back was OK with polos on the back.  I use both boots and polos.  Depends on my mood[wink]

I use polos to run. Like how they keep the legs cooler, and are cheaper to buy so I can match every outfit ;-)
When I am legging my horse up, lots of trotting, I don't use boots or wraps. I think it makes thier legs stronger. Just one of my notions.
If I am working on manouevers I will wrap at least the front, and if going to be working at speed use bell boots too.

Hey
When i ride everyday i just use Pro Choice bell boots... usually when i ride everyday  i find long trotting to work the best to really get the horse working and burn off energy and get 'im in shape... but when i trial ride and do fast work i put front boots on... but everytime i run i ALWAYS put back boots front boots and bellboots on and i agree... i think if u do use boots ALL the time it might weaken a horses legs... but im not sure i have never expirenced it.[smile]
