Hi all, newbie here.  I am transitioning my gaited beast from the TWH bit he's been ridden in all his life to a snaffle.  Since it seems to be going well, I want to go buy my own snaffle this weekend (have been borrowing one).  I'm told the sweet iron with a copper inlay, and some kind of D ring is a good choice.  Anyone have thoughts on this, or know anything about getting a gaited horse to collect naturally, and not depend on that huge WH bit to get collection?   I will admit to being clueless on bits, as the WH bit is the only thing I've ever used on him.

Sorry I am no help with bits!  I use trial and error..  My poor horses.

Thanks anyway.  I may become a trial and error kind of person too.  Was just trying to avoid buying a bunch of bits before finding the right one.

I think you should get the Perfect Bit, D, with either twisted or lifesaver mouthpiece.. you should call them and pick their brain. They know all about bits!  Plus, you might get to talk to your future exhubs. LOL

Rode a WH in a twisted wire bit once.  Thought it seemed harsh!  Not a big fan of those.  I thought I was going for LESS bit??

Their "twisted" is just notches cut out of the mouthpiece... not what you would think as actual twisted wire.  Call'em.. couldn't hurt anything.
