1 Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Im headin out
Update: Morning everyone-looks like Im the only one on the board right now! LOL.
Went to the barrel race and it was a mess. The main arena was too wet, so they literally dug up an area out in the south 40. It must have been where they fed the feedlot cattle because there was a lot of poopey and hay mixed in the ground. They tried to work it as best as they could and kept apologizing, but man it was pretty bad. It was unlevel too. The first barrel was sitting downhill, you had to run uphill to get to the second and downhill to run to the third.
Hunter handled himself OK. He slipped a little bit on the first, but recovered somewhat. He was still a bit shaken so he did this weaving thing across to the second. Turned a decent second until the backside where he slipped again. I even rated him and tried to hold him up. Well then he did something completely off the wall for him; he RAN OFF to the third. He's never done that, usually he stalls and won't do anything but lope. It kinda surprised me. When we got to the third he was going at a pretty good clip, I knew I had to rate him really hard, I tried slowing him down in between, but he pretty much ignored me. I yelled to him at the third and he drove his hiney in the ground, but came off really wide. Finally got him under control and loped home.
We won the 3D, but its not anything that i am proud of. We have got to go back to the practice pen and get these issues resolved. (lol)
Anyway thats how it went!! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks and have a great day!!!

7 Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Tying in aTrailer while traveling???????
If I haul just one of my horses, I don't tie them up because I have a slant to keep them in place. If both of them go in, then I tie both. Hunter, the eldest of the two (he's 5) likes to bite Flash's legs under the divider, so to keep the peace, I tie them up.

Wonder bits are everywhere. Try E-Bay, Jeffers, Valley Vet, State Line Tack, or google it.

9 Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Clinics
I already audited an Ed Wright clinic this year. Was suppose to ride in one in May, but had to have surgery, so that sucked up the cash! YUK!
The only clinics I really attend are Ed clinics. His style fits with my program.[grin]

10 Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Bit Question
I'm just starting to add the speed to the barrels. I recently ran him in the Ed Wright short shank, fixed mouthpiece. He is getting a little heavy in that, so I am changing to the long shank Jr. Cowhorse and see how that feels. If I don't like it I will put him in a chain bit.
Edited: I use the Ed bit because they are really balanced bits and work great when you do his exercises.
I am switching either to the long shank Jr or the chain bit, because they have good lift and feel.
