32  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Winter is ALMOST gone! What do you do?
the weather here is pretty mild all winter long so i get to ride year round and its pretty cool cause my horses are in shape and get long hours every day and they are out on a big 150 acre pasture so they get their excercise that way to so they stay in pretty good shape!!

34  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Good BUT
with young horses you need to keep their feet moving even if it is not going the right way when he stops turn him one way or the other make his feet to a moving and he wont stop with you also make him stop on your command and back him up then move him forwad and do that for a while he will get it just keep working on it hes young but thats no excuse keep on it and it will pay off!! good luck oh and when he buck or hops dont just get off cause that might be what he is wanting make him walk one more time around the ring before quitting cause if you teach him that all he has to do is stop and hop a bit to get you off then thats what he will do!! hope this helps!

35  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Re: Where To Start
I would say go to some clinics take you two year old then mabey rent or barrow an older more experienced horse when you first start till you get comfy with it then start patterning your gelding. also just to start out go to some small town open rodeos and give it a try see how he does. i think that volenteering is a good way to start but remember like horsehappy said they have been doing it a long time and it deffinitly does not happen over night!! good luck!!

45  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Year round??
how many of you ride your horses year round cause the people in my 4-H group only ride their horses when 4-H starts then when its over back out to the pasture they go!! i am not in 4-H any more thats one of the reasons that i quit cause i ride my horses and other peoples horses year round rain or shine. was just wondering about you guys?
