18  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Barrels & Contesting / Red Barn Arena, KY - barrel race 11/3/07
So we went down to the Red Barn Arena this weekend.  I was meeting the gal who was taking Piggy for me to work with her, and Nicole hauled her for me but then decided to just bring her horses and run her mare Rosie in Adult.  There was about 40-45 in the class, and she was in the very last drag, almost at the end.  I'm not sure what her time was but she ended up being FIRST in the 3D!!!  WOOOHOOO!  Way to go Nicole and Rosie!!!  She had a really nice run!

I, too, had a really nice day.  I was going to ride her other mare, Sassy, around, (just hauling her for the experience right now) but I didn't wanna leave Pigs tied up to the trailer by herself, so I braved the rapids and saddled her and rode her around.  SHE DID AMAZING!  She was a little tense and unsure, but no major blow ups (no bronco Rodeo Ramsey moments) and she did everything I asked of her.  Walked in the arena and stood and watched others ride, walked around outside in the make up pen, she was amazing.  She even let a little 10yo kid come running up to her and throw his arms around her to hug her (I thot she'd flip, but she just stood there like an old pro).  Then it was time to load her in the other gal's trailer.  It prolly took us 30-35 minutes to load her at home.  Typical Piggy.  But she literally STEPPED right up in and I was so proud of her!  Good girl!  Now come back with the basics down.  WTC w/ no bucking.  I'll be good then. LOL!

20  Welcome to Runninghorses.net Forums! / Nutrition and Horse Care / Re: Diagnosis EPM
Val, trust me its been a crazy time!!!

Originally, had one vet out, who didn't at first think it was EPM, but because Trav was acting so much like Victory was (who if you remember was diagnosed as having Tetanus), it started freaking me out and I was reading everything I could find.  So I told the vet I wanted the blood test, even tho it had a high chance of showing a false positive.  She didn't want to do it, and 2 weeks later, I now have my results:  a low positive.  Which I've been told by another vet (yes I had one out for a second opinion) that the lower positive horses usually display worse symptoms.  So instead of getting the Cpap done on him ($$$ and dangerous for him) I opted to go right into treatment.  Better that then wait another 2-3 weeks.  So the Marquis will be here on Wed.  I'll keep you updated!!

Well I had the vet come out today, Traveler has EPM.  So now I'm trying to find the best price on Marquis and looking at other additional treatment options (holistic/herbal etc).  Any words of wisdom?

OOOO Rams, tell them the "My moms a real cowgirl story"

Ooh that's a funny one....

So I have this mare.  She's a 99 daughter of Sugar Pep Rio and out of a granddaughter of Full Speed (a result of the awesome Sugar Bars x Flit cross).  At any rate, this mare is 15hh and stout.  She had some training as a 2yo, I believe 5mo of reining training, but then was a broodie ever since.

I got on her once right after she foaled my filly (spring of 06) and she threw me.  (I was bareback w/ no halter or anything, just sittin on her.)  She actually just spooked at some cut logs in the pasture corner when I tried jumping on her bareback from one of them, but then decided to buck the rest of the way back to the barn.  I limped back and got back on her and she was fine, but I didn't push her (or my luck for that matter).

I rode her a couple other times, once when hubs rode Traveler and we rode out down the road and thru the cornfields.  She was awesome.  But she gives off this feeling of being a ticking timebomb.  Well I went to ride her this other time, just out back, do some 'arena' work, and Jaron (then 6) was out there farting around, banging stuff, jumping in and out of the weeds, climbing on the fence, etc, things a normal 6yo boy would be doing (read: driving his mom insane).   I had hollered at him a few times to quit jumping out at me and stuff, and he finally settled to climbing along the roundpen panels.  Pigs was actually doing *awesome*.  Did a bunch of walk/trot and trot/walk transitions, she was bending great, she's got a very soft mouth so that's nice.  Very collected on the stop, all in all working very well for me.  So I decided to lope her.  I trotted once around the 'arena' (just a grassy area out back) and then tipped her nose out and asked her to lope, which she did for about 2-3 strides, and then she just bronced out on me, at which point I thot it best (??) to holler some obscenities at her.  ("that all you got, you bitch!?" or "c'mon bitch, gimmie s'more!" or  something to that effect).  She hopped and bucked and swirled around a half dozen times or more, grunting and blowing, me hollering at her the wootin and hollerin at her the whole time, and then she gave one last huge launch straight up in the air and landed w/ a hard thud and just stood there shaking and breathing hard.  I dropped the reins, gave her her head, and then realized I was still on this earth and alive, and that's when I realized Jaron was around there somewhere, so I looked up for him and found him hanging off the side of the roundpen panels, where I saw him last, but this time he was just hanging there with his jaw dropped open and his eyes as wide as saucers and for a brief moment he was quiet, and then he said .......

"WOW MOM!!!  You're like a real cowgirl!!!"

Yeah, I reckon I am.  smile
