(From Ohio) Post by: Ramsey on January 21, 2006, 07:07:36 AM Hello!!! So glad to have new folks finding the site! If you have any technical questions, I'm the one to ask. I see you're from Ohio! A couple of us, myself included, are from SW Ohio area (Greene county). And a few of us are from IN/KY area, so we're all pretty close! What part of Ohio are you from? Your baby sounds great! I used to train Walking and gaited horses at a big TWH farm in Xenia. I love em! :) Glad to talk to you and welcome aboard! Talk to you soon!
Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: Madison on January 21, 2006, 10:19:41 AM I live in the Pickaway Co. area,
I'm about 30 min for Hocking State Forest. They have a huge Horsemens Camp grounds there and I hope to be able to go to it, But the way my filly is some times, I begining to think I will never get there! And another reason is because I don't have a trailer and she is not trailer broke! I can't even buy a used trailer because I don't have the cash! Carlie :crybaby2: Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! I have been a horse lover since I first knew what a horse was. But I didn't get my filly til Nov. 27, 2004 (She is my first offical horse) I met my baby in the summer of 2004 while I was helping my friend next door with his colts and fillies He is into Buying, Selling, & Trading Gaited Horse. She some what choose me, instead of the other way around, she never got along with the other little ones she was 6 mon. old when I started working with her, And I fell head over heels for the filly, and on Nov. 27, 2004 my parents bought her for me as a early Graduation gift. I have a full time Job for my father who ownes a Printing Company. My Job Title is Graphics Designer/Office Manager/Part time Deliver Girl!!! I am not planning on going to collage at this time! My family does not have horses! To be the truth my dad is not into horses at all and never has been, my Mom was raised on a farm and had a pony until she married my Dad at 18 years age. I live in Pickaway Co. which is about central part of Ohio if you were to look at the map of Ohio and look under Columbus for a town called Circleville that is my home town! Carlie Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: valerie on January 22, 2006, 07:49:23 PM I know where Circleville is!!! I'm Nicole, I have 4 horses, 2 cats, and 6 dogs (yes I said 6)! I raise Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and have a litte due Feb 7th. I used to show western pleasure a bunch, then did alittle barrel racing, retired my barrel mare and now we just trail ride! I have been working with green horses the last 2 years and am trying to get one broke enough to do the barrels! I am a slow worker! :) My friends and I have been to hocking, almost got lost! So if you know the trails, let me know! We are always looking for a good trail guide!!! :clap2:

Last year was the year of the "lets get our unbroke 4 year old stallion gelded and take him trail riding in 2-3 weeks"!! This summer was very interesting and fun! No-one got hurt and everyone had a good time- which is all that matters! The only way to get a horse broke is to get them out there! :) Heck for that matter it won't be till the summer/fall so you will have plenty of time to get her ready! :)

Hey can anyone give some tips to get my filly to turn? Because every time I ride her outside the pasture she will not obey any of my commands! For example: Today I wanted her to go back to the barn, and she wanted to go across the road, every time I want her to go L or R, she continues to go straight even with her head pulled to the side! What Do I Do??? HELP!!!!! Carlie :horse: Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: Shannon on January 28, 2006, 12:47:11 PM Now Maine,You know we consider you a mid-westerner at heart. What Do I Do??? HELP!!!!! Carlie :horse: I don't know if this will help but, here it goes. Do you have an arena or area that is confind to ride her in? tyr do some wall work with her. With her age and all she may not understand what it is you are asking her to do. One thing you can try is to flex her to both sides while standing still. Get her to the point she gives to the pressure smoothly. Then once you have her understanding that, while you have her head around, gentley que her with you feet to get her to understand you want her to turn. Don't worry if she turns only half or goes around in less then a perfect circle. Just get her to understand that when you have pressure on one side and putting your heel in her she is to follow through. You can also walk her straight to a fence (so she will have to turn one way or another) and then put the pressure on one side and que with your feet. I have another suggestion, untill you have her understanding more of what you want, I would not ride her in open country. She is a baby, and babies spook at wierd things and sometimes nothing at all. Keep working her in a controles enviorment until you know you have basic controle of her. It will keep her mind on you and you bones and internal organs where they should be. Val can also give you helpful hints to. E-mail her and ask. Val has been in the business for a while and she really knows her stuff. She would be happy to help if she can. Just a thought (or two) Good luck and keep us updated. :) Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: Horsehappy on January 29, 2006, 12:45:58 AM Shann is in Kentucky (which could almost be considered a forigen country :tongue3:) Quote Oh man HH, did you REALLY go there????? ESPECIALLY after your "tour" of our fair commonwealth today??? :tongue3: Oh yes I did!!!! :laughing5: I went there and about every where else! Ok, everybody let me set the stage here for this one. I live just north of Evansville In, About 15 miles. Shann lives just west of Louisville Ky. About 45 miles maybe 50. It only takes me 2.5 hours to get to Louisville from my house with a truck and trailer. Starting from Henderson Ky., following Shanns directions, it takes me three hours and I still over shoot her place by about 10 miles. I end up on the other side of Fort Knox in a small whistle stop named West Point. Shann gave me direction and told me to look for a Marathon station at the intersection of 448 and hwy 60. It should be easy to find since the intersection has a stop-light at it. Once I see this then I am to look for the next Marathon station about two miles down and turn there. Ok, I am traveling along and get to see the wonderful countryside of the middle part of Ky. I am looking at the clock and wondering when I am supposed to get there since I have been hauling Sissy for almost 2.5 hours now. I see a Marathon station with a light but it is the junction of St Rd 144 and 60. So I go past still looking for 448. I get to a ‘T’ and must turn right or left. I look at the signs. To the left is hwy 60 to the right, is hwy 31. I turn left. After going a little further and noticing I have now been on the road three hours and am quickly approaching Louisville, I stop at a gas station, with just enough room for me to pull the truck and trailer. I call Shann. Ok, I am in some place called West Point and some one had better come fetch me. Now, as I am waiting, I ask the girls in the store what road I am on. They tell me I am not on 60 but I am on 31W. Hu? There is the sign (you can see from the counter) that has both road signs on it. The girls tell me that I am not on 60 but that I am on 31W. What ever. As I am waiting, Mother Nature tells me it is time to go to the little girls room. I ask where the restrooms are and the girls tell me “we don’t have one”. Are you kidding me? You are a public gas station with out public restrooms? I am thinking, “Shann, get here fast!” I try to think of something else (anything else) crossing my legs but finally have to go in and ask if there are any restrooms with in a short distance. “Nope”. I go out side and start to survey the area for the nearest tree or clump of bushes. I have been on the road for several hours, and had been drinking my Mt. Dew since I left Henderson and Mother Nature is not going to let me ignore her request. I guess I must have had a look of desperation on my face, because right before I try to find the nearest tree (and there is no where I would not be in the public view) one of the girls comes out and tells me I can use the employee restroom. As I am sprinting past her I tell her thank you and find the restroom. Relief never felt so good! Very shortly after I am finished, I see Shann and George pull up. Since Shann also did not know that 31W and 60 run together, I show her the signs. Learn something new everyday. I can believe that she might not know this easier then I can believe that the two girls in the store don’t know this since you can see both road signs from the counter. Shann gets in the truck with me but George does not let us out of his sight anyway. As we get to the Marathon station I point out the road is 144, not 448. When I went home last night (following George’s directions) I saw where 448 feeds into 144. That would have worked well had I been coming in from Brandenburg (which is north). Does not work if you are coming in from Henderson (which is west). Shann honey, you are a truly smart, caring, wonderful person, but Rand McNally your not. :tongue2: Next time someone needs directions, hand the phone to George. I should mention that since She and George fed me some really good bar-b-que and they are housing Sissy and my trailer (long story of why the trailer is there) the looonnnnggg drive was well worth it. :blob10: Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! HH, Madison has a older Sister (Pocket) that is about, 6 to 8 years older and she is still Dark Grey Like Madison, She also has a little brother (?) about 1 year younger and he was almost Black. They all are from the same Sire, and he is Pure BLACK. So if she does turn light grey like her Dam I won't care. I love her anyway. Got a question for you, would you dare to ride a 23 1/2 month old horse bareback in the open? Carlie Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: Ramsey on February 05, 2006, 09:43:28 PM Got a question for you, would you dare to ride a 23 1/2 month old horse bareback in the open? That's how I started my colt back in 99. The winter/spring before he turned 2 (he was born June 26th so he was a late baby in my eyes, even tho 'technically' a 2yo) - I started climbing on his back in the pasture and letting him walk around with me a little bit. If you're not too heavy (and back then, I wasn'! hahaha), and the horse is stout enough, its not a prob at all. Just get up there and sit, and let her walk around. Be ready to jump off if she decides to take off running with you! Takes a good rider to do this and you have to be careful, but I think it's a great experience for a horse. Then that following summer, when I started working him a tiny bit, I saddled him right up and off we went, no probs! Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: Horsehappy on February 06, 2006, 01:00:31 AM Carlie, greys get greyer as they get older. Dasher started out as a sorrel. It was not until she was about three or four when she finally went more grey then red. You can see her now that she is nine. Completley grey now. She still has red "flea bites" when she sheds, but I bet your filly will end up grey. May take her a while but I bet she goes grey. Nothing wrong with that. I like greys. She may always be a dark grey, but she will be considederd grey. Now about your other question. I would not suggest you doing that. I admit that is how I first rode Junior. As far as her age, I see no real problem being on her at that age. Be careful not to over do it, because by two, her knees are just finishing closing up and you can do allot of damage if you put to much of a stain on them. Her knees are like a baby's head they have soft spots. It takes a while for the caralidge to turn to bone and the growth plates at the end of her bones are still growing and will until she is about five. As far as riding her out in the open. If you are going to do this anyway, The smaller the area you do this in, the better. If she will tolerate you just sitting and doing nothing else, you may be able to get away with it. Problem you run into is this, you have no controle so if she does have a problem, you have no way of getting controle, and if she acts up and you bail off, you have just taught her the way to get you off is to act up. I told you that I started Junior off that way but what you don't know is that I did not attempt this until late in his two year old year and that I had done two solid years of ground work with him before I even considered the idea. I have been around horses since I was nine years old. I have had years of riding experience and I would still not consider myself any kind of expert. I started off with a very old gelding as my first horse who would tolerate about anything. He showed me more then I could have ever learned in lessons or clinics. I did not start off with a yearling who knows nothing. Remember this equation, green + green = black and blue. you may be lucky and have that rare horse that will do anything at any age and never have any problems. Chances are though, that won't be the case and once she has learned the wrong behavior, you will spen the rest of your time together trying to figure out ways to re-educate her. It takes only a short time to teach the wrong behavor and then years to re-teach them the right behavor. She still knows very little and so she may not know this is not how it is done. The first time she does something though, she has just learned the wrong behavor and she will do that from then on. Imagine how hard it would have been for you to go from the first grade to the fourth grade. You would have had a lot of catching up to do and very little time to do it and there would have been some problems in-between. I am not saying this is not done. Look at allot of the futurity horses running out there. Yes, the run the pattern. Yes some earn money doing it. The problem is though, look to see how many of thoses horses are still sound and sane by the time they are five. Out of all the horses started that fast, only a small handfull are able to handle the pressure and still be running by the time their bones are fused. Most will become lame or crippled or will have thier minds blown and not be able to do anything more the be breeding stock (or even worse) can never be trusted around anyone else except the profesionals who can handle riding them. Take it slow. Get as much help as you can from people who have the experience. If you can go to work for someone who traines then do it and watch and learn. You will get so much valuable experience from that and it will prove to be a life savor at times. Just because someone else was able to do something does not mean the same procedure will work for you or your horse. I am not trying to crush your dream, I am trying to keep you and your horse from getting hurt. You can read all the books printed about any subject but unless you know how to apply what you have read, you know nothing. JMHO.

I understand, what you are telling me believe me. And when I do work with my filly I am very, cautions. During the winter I went out and tacked her up and started out of the barn into her pasture about half way out my filly just stop and laid right down, (but has soon as she stopped I know she was up to something the moment I felt her front legs start to go down I had braced myself on the saddle horn) the moments she laid down I got off her back made her get right back up, and I got right back on I wanted to teach her that laying down was not going to get me off her, since then she has never tried it on me again as for Rear & bucking she never tried on me, but if she does, I will know what to do! When I got my filly in 2004 from the time she was 6 months old up to 9 months old when my parents bought her for me. I had taught the horse to come when I whistled out the front door to the field across from my house were she was kept. Last summer I started studying Pat Parelli and I have a new thought on how horses think. And every time I go to work with my filly I put what I learned to use and it has made a BIG change in my filly. AND ME. Carlie :blob10: Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! (From Ohio) Post by: 1Wildcowgirl on February 06, 2006, 03:21:50 AM Carlie, thanks for sharing the pictures! Madison is very pretty! I see no problem with you riding her, but in a small area. This is how I break all my horses. I saddle them up and walk the around, or lunge them if they no how. If I can I will take them to my friends indoor arena and let them run around so they can feel the saddle moving and shifting positions on there back. I will do that for maybe 1-3 weeks depending on the horse. Then I ALWAYS have someone else there to help in case I need it. But I will saddle the horse, bridal and all, but leave the halter on and clip a lead rope on to the halter and have someone who knows about horses lead me around. Yes you will feel kinda silly but beleive me it helps. I do all the guiding and stoping. The person will just walk beside me and I will tell them when i am getting ready to turn and they will move out of the way, or I will tell them when I am stopping and they will wait for me to pull back and stop. Another thing I do is once I am on I will only put one foot in the sturrip incase I need to bale off. Depending on the horse I will do this for about a week. Just take it slow. I know it sucks at first but laying a good foundation is very improtant. Also remember you don't need to work a young horse for hours, they are just babies and get bored. Ending on a good note is always the best thing to do!
Have fun with her and keep us posted! She is a very cute filly! Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!! There are always exceptions to the rule Nice looking as a baby.

Carlie :blob10: Sounds as though you are on the right track. you also have the right idea on watching others and seeing how they do it too. I watched a lot of Clinton Anerson and tried what I saw there. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. Try new things and see what works for you. Nic is also giving great advice with the idea of having someone around to help (if you can). Makes things go allot easier and just in case, you have someone there. I am not trying to say you know nothing, but I have made plenty of mistakes thinking I knew too much and know of people who have gotten hurt (or really screwed a horse up) because they watched all the natural horsemanship videos or read all the books and then thought they knew what to do and how to do it. I guess it would be easier if we could teach the horses to read all those books so they knew what they are supposed to do. :dontknow: Title: Re: Hi I'm New To The Site!!
